About This Site




This site has been assembled for the use of the HUCS (Heads of University Counselling Services) Group, a special interest group of the Association for University and College Counselling Division of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

We welcome comment and contributions from those involved in the management of all forms of student counselling provision in the UK. We will happily include sites relevant to non-university settings if these are offered.

This is not intended to be a exhaustive list, but rather is a list of sites which individual Heads of Counselling Services have found to be of professional interest. All the sites listed are the properties of independent organisations. The fact that they appear in this list does not imply any recommendation or endorsement of their content by HUCS, AUCC or BACP. National Association of Managers of Student Services A most comprehensive index of links for those working principally in Further Education but with some relevance to Higher Ed.

HERO Higher Education Research Opportunities - A searchable database of high quality HE information - mainly from national sources. A separate student-orientated link library - Studentzone links to many student advice sites.

Sensitive Map of UK Universities and HE Colleges An easy way to locate the web sites of any university or other HE and FE institution.

Association of Managers of Student Services in Higher Education - influential and active organisation that represents and campaigns on behalf of Student Services managers.

Organisations in the HE Sector

Universities UK (Formerly the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals of the Universities of the UK). Several pages dealing with strategic issues facing universities, listing publications and providing a directory of links to HE organisations.

LSC (Learning and Skills Council). Replaced Further Education Funding Council - useful FE related links here.

HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England). Medium sized searchable site, particularly useful for access to summaries on policies in areas such as widening access. Similarly SHEFC (Scottish Higher Education Funding Council); HEFCW (Higher Education Funding Council for Wales).

HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency). Publishes data and has an on-line enquiry facility for those in the ac.uk domain.

QAA (Quality Assurance Agency). News-releases, publication lists and more links.

Computers in Mental Health Note - this is a list of sites for Computers in Mental Health, but not all links from the associated page work as at 2/10/2006 - In particular www.mhrc.cc , which is a key site on the subject noted by  BACP in their publication on Online Counselling is not working at present, and may no longer exist. It's also worth looking at:  ISMHO and Metanoia

Imperial College Health Centre A large comprehensive site of links relevant to psychology, counselling and student problems. Extremely useful and well edited.

Internet Mental Health Canadian mental health encyclopedia.

Mental Health Foundation UK charity site dealing with mental health problems and learning disabilities.

MIND Generally very informative about mental health issues; particularly recommended for its booklets section where the excellent "How to..." and "Understanding ..." series can be viewed in PDF format

Oxford Brookes On student mental health, including a useful summary of research .

PsychnetUK UK psychological listings. Use this short cut for the counselling psychology section.

Psychweb US equivalent of the above. Also try Psych Central.

Royal College of Psychiatrists Downloadable leaflets with useful further contacts.

Befrienders Extensive information about depression and suicide in English and basic information about depression and suicide in many other languages.

Computer Viruses A authoritative list of virus hoaxes and a link to a list of real viruses.

Cults Described in a newspaper as 'part of a huge, thorough and aggressively sane data base taking in new religions'.

Data Protection Code of Practice for FE and HE. Short cut to counselling section of Code.

Eating Disorders Association A site with lots of relevant informaton, including information for men with eating difficulties. Sometimes hard to get a link.

Harvard Report on Student Drinking in US An interesting paper on a US Govermental Substance Abuse Site. Alcohol Statistic for UK are available from the IAS.

Institute for the Study of Drug Dependence (now Drugscope) As well as useful general reading, links and an encyclopedia, this site offers a Student Guide.

National Autistic Society Information and links about autistic spectrum conditions including Asperger's syndrome. There is also a site specifically dealing with problems encountered by UK University Students With Autism And Asperger's Syndrome.

Samaritans Help and facts on suicide.

Self-Help Book A complete, comprehensive and authoritative US psychological self-help book online.

Skill's website offers useful advice on the Disability Discrimination Act.
